Why do turbocharged engines require special lubrication?
Turbocharged engines need special lubrication because the turbocharger components are exposed to significantly higher temperatures, in the order of 800 ° C. This is due to the work with very hot exhaust gases supplied to the turbocharger. Therefore, the elements of the turbocharger require engine oils that will withstand operation at such extreme temperatures.
Which components of the turbocharger are most vulnerable and require protection? How can synthetic oil help them?
Turbochargers have turbines that rotate around the bearings at very high speed, while generating large amounts of heat and friction. The turbines are driven by very hot exhaust gases entering the turbocharger. Over time, bearings and other parts of the turbocharger can accumulate friction marks and varnish deposits, which can lead to wear and tear on the turbocharger components.
Synthetic engine oils, characterized by excellent resistance to oxidation at high temperatures and the ability to counteract the formation of deposits on the most important parts of the turbocharger and engine. Thus, turbocharged engines receive the best possible protection.
If you use conventional engine oil in a turbocharged engine, you may notice that it can not cope with the excess heat generated by the engine. As a result, damaging lacquer deposits will accumulate on the most important elements of the turbocharger, resulting in reduced engine performance. High temperatures in the area of ​​turbocharger bearings can lead to local overheating of mineral oil and other problems, ranging from rapid oxidation to charring of the oil.

Why should a turbocharged engine not be switched off immediately after stopping the vehicle, and only after a certain period of unloaded operation?
This is a good and frequent question. Indeed, for car owners with a turbocharged engine, it is recommended that for a short time after stopping the vehicle and before switching it off, they allow the engine to run without load.
This behavior is explained by significantly higher oil temperatures after stopping the vehicle in turbocharged engines, compared to oil temperatures in normal drive units, especially in the area of ​​turbocharger bearings. As we have already mentioned, the temperatures in the turbocharged engine reach even 800 ° C!
Leaving the engine for a while before turning off in idling mode will allow the oil to pass through the engine and remove excess heat from the most important parts. If the engine switches off immediately after stopping, the oil stops circulating in the system, and you risk damaging the engine part.
What’s more, if we use conventional mineral oil that can not provide full motor protection at such high temperatures, excess heat will cause oil destruction in a process called “coking”, which can cause the formation of coke and lacquer deposits.
